No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
