New research reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
