The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
