The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
